There had been rumors that the upcoming movie would be set a few hundred years before the first movie in the prequels, in the time of the Old Republic. Weiss were originally meant to spearhead a trilogy but were reportedly too busy making shows for Netflix after signing a nine-figure deal with the streaming service in 2019. Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Jenkins was not the first person in line to direct the next Star Wars movie. So yeah, we've been working on it for a while. The name of the movie will also be familiar to many: it is the title of an iconic series of video games that centered around Rebel pilots fighting back against the Empire. Star Wars: Rogue Squadron was revealed back in December 2020, and in a video (opens in new tab) coinciding with the announcement, Jenkins talked up her history with the Air Force and her desire to create the "greatest fighter pilot movie ever". Jenkins also has Wonder Woman 3 in the pipeline, meaning her schedule is particularly busy. But, a roadblock arrived – the film has been delayed, reportedly due to creative differences between Patty Jenkins and Lucasfilm. A recent Star Wars report from Vanity Fair (opens in new tab) has said the film is "further off" than Waititi's. No other details have yet been announced other than the movie will be heading to cinemas, thought the film is expected next on the big screen release slate: Kathleen Kennedy told Total Film in a recent interview that the film is headed for a "late 2023" release, but said "we haven't locked anything in" when asked if that meant December 2023.
